One Green Thing A Day


Hey y'all! Happy Friday! As we gear up for the weekend, I would like to share an intention that I set for myself in my journey back to health. I was feeling really overwhelmed by all the diets and paths to health out there. It's funny that even as someone who has always been health conscious, I should feel this way; as though I am "starting over". Should I become vegetarian again? Full-on vegan? Is paleo the way? Should I eat like my ancestors? Give up all processed sugar? All of the above? Should I track my points? My calories?

I was ready give up before even getting started! So I went back to what feels good. I let myself finish this phrase: 

I feel really good about myself when I _________________. 


One of my answers was "when I eat green stuff." So I've been doing just that. Giving my body what it asks for in the way of having just one green thing a day. Rather than categorize my morning smoothies, or lunch-time salads, under any specific label - I am just living. I am nourishing my body to the best of my ability, so that I can continue nourishing my daughter's chubby little one. 


Today, I am sharing with you my go-to morning smoothie. I drink this to get those greens in, to stay hydrated (thank you coconut water <3), and because it is extra refreshing on warm days (hello desert!). I usually drink this along with a bowl of oatmeal, or a serving of egg whites. Whatever makes my body feel good.

This smoothie is obviously perfect for anyone, but my fellow breastfeeding mamas know the importance of staying hydrated. When I used to embark on long runs, coconut water was an excellent way to replenish electrolytes. It is also high in potassium and magnesium, two nutrients the body needs for general health and good performance. Coincidently, when I am dehydrated, my calves start to cramp up - this is a no-no for any runner, but also for any busy (breastfeeding or otherwise) mama. So without further ado...

Hydrating Green Smoothie, serves one

1 cup coconut water
1 banana  
2 cups spinach
1 cup frozen pineapple

Combine all ingredients into a blender, or a Nutri NINJA, whatever you've got at home. Blend until smooth, or your preferred consistency. Enjoy!
